“we really need some Bishops who understand philosophy!” Or, who have real faith and spiritual depth and understanding. I think Rowan Williams has it. I never felt that Justin Welby does.
RW is head and shoulders above other ABCs, let alone other Bishops - an academic that I know described him as intellectually the greatest ABC since Anselm, which if not absolutely true must at least be a first approximation of the truth. Someone like RW only comes along once every few centuries. I suspect RW may have lacked other necessary virtues, but see my 'stupid and ungodly CofE' post for more! I actually started to write another paragraph at the end unpacking the philosophy comment (I originally wrote theology) but realised it opened out into too much new territory, and I wanted to stick to my metaphysical point.
at your leisure, Father. (and also I'm speaking from respect with my title here, but feeling I should see if you prefer some other title or just a first name basis? I ask sincerely, without guile).
I actually wonder if you could elaborate on "we need bishops who understand philosophy"?
I think my question is an epistemological one actually; I think the question is what *is* knowledge? Because what we know- truly- we must act upon and out of.
